Overstimulation After a Traumatic Brain Injury: How Exercises and Music have Proven to be an Effective ToolThe purpose of this case study was to analyze a participant who was evaluated over a 12-week period in an exercise environment dealing with overstimulation after suffering a Traumatic Brain Injury. This project was intended to learn what triggers the participant, develop strategies to reduce distractions, and observe how exercise and music can be effective tools while exercising. A behavioral log was created in order to monitor the participant's behavior twice a week for 12 weeks while observing his environment when exercising with music versus without music. In the course of his exercise program, music therapy proved effective in reducing overstimulation triggered by loud noises.

Transition to Electronic Requisition and Vacancy ReportThe goal of my project was to create a more efficient way of creating a notification of vacancy report. Prior to this project, notification vacancy reports were being completed manually and sent via email to the Human Resource manager and recruiter for review. This project will eliminate the need for making a job requisition manually. Through the applicant tracking system “iSolved Hire,” the hiring managers will be able to create their own job requisition when a job becomes vacant. Notification of vacancy was a process that was time consuming, the new system will be more efficient and effective and take about three to five minutes to complete. The recruiters will be notified immediately after the requisition is attained.

Supportive Living Inc. : Creating and Implementing Dynamic Stretching Plan for Individuals with Limited Range of MotionThe purpose of this project was to track and record the progress of dynamic exercises and the impact they had on individuals’ exercise plans who have limited range of motion. All participants had preexisting goals of improving mobility in their lower body and strengthening weaker areas in their bodies, which overall helped them with their daily living activities. The exercise plans for each participant were constructed by professionals in the field of exercise science using evidence-based approaches that focused on the lower body, upper body, core strengthening, and full body. Implementing these dynamic exercise plans to increase mobility and strengthen weaker areas over five weeks also resulted in increasing muscle preparedness before exercising and increasing independence and confidence within the individuals.

Substance Abuse Stigma: Identifying and Eliminating Barriers in RecoveryRecovery Centers of America in Danvers is an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center that offers different levels of care and treatment to those with a substance abuse disorder. Stigma surrounding substance abuse presents barriers to individuals seeking treatment and individuals in different stages of recovery. The purpose of this internship was to identify how patients perceived and experienced stigma. A group was run regarding stigma and at the end participants were asked to complete two surveys. Analysis was conducted on the information recorded, and the findings were presented to the clinical team on Unit 1. Clinicians reported that a deeper understanding of how stigma is perceived and experienced by their patients will allow them to better care for and support them in their recovery.

Pet Obesity: Challenges and SolutionsThis undergraduate internship project was designed to communicate to pet owners the health and welfare implications of pet obesity and to provide information on how to achieve weight loss. Being overweight and obese contributes to a variety of disease processes and negatively affects the quality of life in pets. A survey was created and distributed to determine how owners view their pet's weight whether it is obese, overweight, normal weight, or underweight. The results revealed that the pet owners see their pets as a normal weight until they examine the Body Conditioning Score chart where they gain a better perspective of their pets' weight.

Improving Patient Satisfaction Using a SurveyThe goal of the undergraduate internship project was to enhance patient satisfaction using a survey. The dental team aims to improve patient relationships, ensure that every patient receives excellent care and service, and establish effective communication. Through the survey, we were able to measure the quality of care and consider our patients' feedback.

LifeConnectionsUsa: New Hire Orientation OutcomesThe purpose of this project was to gauge how employees felt on the effectiveness of their New Hire Orientation. By utilizing a survey, I was able to get the input of 30 employees who underwent two different lengths of orientation. 20 employees took part in a four-day orientation, and 10 employees were part of the two-week orientation. Both groups of employees agreed that additional employee training had an impact on employee retention and that a longer more in-depth orientation was more beneficial for employee readiness.

Improving Hiring Practices: The Implementation of a Phone Screening ProgramThe Northeast Arc is a nonprofit organization with a goal to help individuals with disabilities reach their full potential. The agency aims to integrate these individuals into the community through engagement in school, work, and social events. The objective of this senior internship was to hire the right candidates to better serve this population. The talent acquisition team in human resources was asked to post three open positions for skills trainers in three different areas of Massachusetts. The candidates that applied were evaluated during the phone screening program and then forwarded onto the hiring manager for a formal interview. The program was proven to be successful, the positions were filled and removed from the applications managing system.

Resource Guide for Community Health Workers: Patient-centered Care PromotionThis study was designed to develop a well-organized resource guide in Microsoft Teams for North Shore Physicians Group community health workers (CHWs). The resource guide was designed to aid community health workers with day-to-day tasks by reducing time researching resources in databases. The goal was to promote more efficient patient-centered care. Seven CHWs and 30 patients were recruited to participate during the community van peak hours. Results indicated that resources for transportation and housing assistance were the most common requests. The outcome of the project was a successful resource for community health workers which met their need for a comprehensive and organized tool that allows them to use their time more efficiently to better serve their patients.

Enhancing the Quality of Life for Those who Survive a Brain InjuryThe project intends to build a program to ensure that patients with brain injuries receive high-quality rehabilitation services to minimize brain-related impairments and death. It also aims to mitigate the negative effects of brain damage by assisting patients in taking the required steps. To achieve this, the project will bring together brain injury survivors and healthcare professionals to come up with the most optimum measures for curbing brain injury disorders.

Effectiveness of Treatment Methodology for Patients with Substance Abuse Disorders: Improving Patient Experiences in Inpatient DetoxIt is important that the treatment methodology of addiction centers is measured to ensure patients are receiving the best care of treatment. Recovery Centers of America (RCA) is an addiction center based in Danvers Massachusetts. RCA’s mission is to save one million lives from the disease of addiction. RCA has a host of programs and professional staff to aid in recovery. Through evidence-based treatment and a holistic approach, RCA is able to deliver the most appropriate form of treatment to each patient. The purpose of this internship was to collect patient feedback on the effectiveness of treatment while in detox. Patients were given a Likert Scale and an open-ended questionnaire. Three themes emerged from patients' qualitative and quanitative responses.

Developing a Powerpoint that Educates Incoming Staff and Interns about the Cath Lab Department: Highlighting the Significance and Impacts of TAVR Procedures on PatientsThe Stamford Hospital Cath Lab department is an area where cardiac procedures such as TAVR and angiograms are performed. The laboratory consists of multiple healthcare specialists that all play a key role in these various procedures. For this poster the main tasks involve educating incoming staff and interns in the cath lab department about transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures, along with emphasizing the significance of it. To add on, the interns and staff must also be informed about the complexity of these procedures in order to improve their knowledge and skills in this department. Aside from that, the methods that will be implemented is collecting pieces of data on patients regarding this procedure while forming it into bar graphs. Overall, the main goal will be to have incoming staff and interns be aware of how TAVR procedures is such a critical aspect to this department and how it impacts the healthcare community.

Individual Treatment Plan: Thirty Day Check in and Discharge of Cardiac Rehab PatientsThis undergraduate internship was to show the importance of participating in a cardiac rehabilitation program after heart surgery and the importance of living a heart healthy life. The cardiac rehabilitation program at Anna Jaques Hospital (MA) includes an initial, holistic assessment and patient goal setting followed by scheduled re-assessments and a physician’s approved discharge. The intern’s project demonstrated their ability to conduct scheduled re-assessments and discharges of select patients. Facilitated by the student intern, the patients demonstrated growth in the following areas upon their discharge: exercise workloads, frequency of exercise, healthy nutrition choices, reduced stress levels. Patient two was not able to reach their ITP discharge nutritional goal.

Rock Painting: A Suitable Community Project For People With Developmental And Intellectual DisabilitiesRock painting is a suitable project for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. It is designed to develop fine motor skills, social skills, and to unlock artistic potential, which create opportunities to serve their community by engaging themselves in decorating public spaces. Rock painting projects involve teaching and leisure activities. Participants were taught how to hold and use multi-purpose acrylic paints and paint brushes, and were also taught the art of community as part of ensuring their integration. Activities involved going outside to pick rocks and outdoor exploration. Also included was the art of engaging in creativity like mixing paints and drawing. The people involved in the program took part in hiding and finding rocks, and decorating a place in their community with the painted rocks.

Impact of Controlled Exercise Programs on Balance and Coordination: A Case Study of Stroke SurvivorsThe purpose of this project was to monitor and record the progress of coordination and balance by using a controlled exercise program in stroke survivors. All participants had predetermined goals of improving coordination and balance, which helps improve ambulation and other functionality. The exercise routines of each participant were designed carefully by professionals in the field of exercise science using proven techniques focusing on the upper body, lower body, core strengthening, and transition to standing and walking. Implementing consistent exercise programs to improve balance and coordination over ten weeks also resulted in transferable functionality in the participants' daily lives, including increased independence for daily living activities and enjoyment.

Striving For Quality & Accurate Data CollectionService providers rely on precise and valuable data to deliver effective, person-centered care to acquired brain injury individuals. The purpose of this internship was to educate staff and improve their daily reporting of individuals’ data. Individual data collection was not always recorded because of challenges staff faced. Challenges included newly hired staff that were not trained and passwords that had expired. The role of the student intern was to problem solve and develop solutions that would increase data intake. Solutions included educating staff and providing a meaningful rationale for accurate data collection. Due to the student intern’s interventions, all staff improved the quality and quantity of data collected.

Medical Document Renovation: Utilizing the eHana System to Improve Client Record ContentThe implementation of technology to aid in healthcare processes such as data storage aims to provide ease of medical documentation through improved data accessibility. Using the eHana system, health outcomes were improved. This project involved examining the efficacy of transitioning from paper medical records to the eHana system for a safer, faster way to access patient records and provide treatment. The results showed that during the transition, more than 40 clients’ medical records were transferred to a securer, more convenient electronic space weekly.

Hospital Employee Satisfaction: Best Practices in Staffing Ineffectiveness PreventionThis project investigated the issues that prevented staffing effectiveness at Tewksbury Hospital. Project objectives included identifying staffing issues and uncover strategies to improve their overall effectiveness. Interviews were conducted on 18 staff members of various ethnic backgrounds and from multiple departments within the hospital. The interview consisted of eight questions regarding staff satisfaction with their jobs and their overall work environment. Results showed that most staff members are not completely satisfied with their jobs (including their compensation and workload). Hospital leadership seeks to utilize the results of the survey to improve staffing effectiveness. Some suggestions from the interview included revising staff compensation, providing physical and mental health support for staff, and encouraged flexibility and understanding of staff needs.

Sensory Overload in a Workout Environment: Managing Sensory Overload After a Traumatic Brain InjuryThis case study analyzed a participant over a ten week period in an exercise environment dealing with sensory overload after a Traumatic Brain injury. The project was designed to learn what triggers the participant and makes them feel overstimulated, and to learn how to minimize those triggers and better manage their overstimulation while working out. Working closely with the participants twice a week for 10 weeks, a behavioral log was created to keep track of the environment around him and any triggers that could have caused the participant to feel overstimulated. The results have shown that loud noises and sudden movements have been a main trigger, along with being over instructed during his workout routine.

Workout Recording Log: Implementing Progressive OverloadThis undergraduate internship project was aimed to implement an effective work out log to record a participant’s progress of a designed workout plan. All workouts and routines were created to accomplish a predetermined fitness goal. Using a workout log, participants were able to track what exercises were completed. The new workout log was created focusing on the principle of Progressive Overload and phases were implemented in which exercises could be modified in either weight, resistance, or repetitions. A gradual increase in these categories overtime allow for progress to be made and helps to avoid participants from reaching a plateau in their workout program. Furthermore, exercises can be modified to increase difficulty and strength, ultimately achieving progress towards the participants’ overall fitness goals.
