COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning)

Salem State University began our COIL initiative at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using SUNY’s pioneering COIL Institute as a model and for support, we began engaging faculty in Collaborative Online International Learning through faculty learning communities and over 30 faculty across our disciplines have been trained in COIL, and over 300 SSU students and over 500 students at partner universities worldwide have been able to interact and collaborate in meaningful ways. We are also proud to have been awarded the 2020 AASCU Excellence and Innovation Award for COIL: Sustaining Global Engagement During a Pandemic. This collection includes syllabi, assignment prompts, teacher reflections, and learning resources used in SSU COIL courses.

“Math for Childhood Education I” COIL Student Work – 3This project outlines an engaging and interactive lesson plan designed to review and reinforce the fundamental concepts of basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The core idea is to transform traditional math review into a captivating experience by integrating mathematical magic tricks. These "tricks" serve as fun, hands-on challenges that stimulate students' logical reasoning and critical thinking, while making the learning process highly enjoyable.

“Math for Childhood Education I” COIL Student Work – 1In this project, students share an idea for addressing basic math operations in Braille, a tactile reading and writing system consisting of raised dots organized into cells of up to 6 dots. The project demonstrates associations between letters and Braille symbology, as well as numbers, and proposes some calculations to be performed in Braille. Finally, the group shares a QR code that allows access to a game—Braille number bingo—that can be developed with students aged 9 and 10, from an inclusive perspective.

“Math for Childhood Education I” COIL Student Work – 2In this project, students share an idea for schools to organize a soiree, addressing mathematical concepts from Basic Education in a creative, playful, and interdisciplinary way. The event is planned to last approximately one month. Students would be formed into groups, free to choose which art form and mathematical content they would like to address. Some classes in the first two weeks would be dedicated to this decision, along with research in books and online on the topic, and organizing the spaces to be used. In the third and fourth weeks, the students would create plays (recorded on video), poems, paintings, photographs, and sculptures. On a weekend day, with parents invited to attend and appreciate their children's work, the students would exhibit their creations and explain their relationship to mathematics to their classmates. The teacher could also make and take ready-made art, like famous ones.
