    • Mid-career Faculty and Integrated Scholarship in Public Comprehensive Universities

      Despite heavy teaching loads, some mid-career faculty in public comprehensive universities in our study described how they successfully completed scholarly research by employing integrated scholarship- that for many faculty spontaneously evolved at this time in their career. This unexpected study finding suggests that some faculty intentionally worked on their research to also inform their teaching, and their teaching simultaneously informed their research was first described by Carol Colbeck (1998) in her article titled "Merging in a Seamless Blend: How faculty integrate teaching and research." This paper was to be presented at the AERA Annual Conference in a round-table discussion in San Francisco which was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

      North Shore Community Development Coalition's Punto Urban Art Museum, located in a predominantly Latinx neighborhood in Salem, MA, features permanent art installations that celebrate Latinx culture and community. The art, featured on the brick walls of neighborhood apartment buildings, examines themes of immigration, assimilation, and culture. This photovoice project asks the viewer to look closely at the art to reflect on the modern Latinx experience in Salem and beyond.
    • Growth Mindset Training in Prelicensure Nursing Students

      Growth Mindset training correlates with student success at all educational levels but has not been applied to nursing education. This pilot study evaluated 35 prelicensure community college registered nursing students regarding their mindset perspective and learning styles before and after a brief mindset training intervention. Following a mindset training intervention, participants demonstrated increased growth mindset attributes and utilization of more improved evidence-based learning strategies.

    • The Pronunciation Effect On Vocabulary Choices Of Multilingual English Speakers In Oral Discourse

      Pronunciation and vocabulary are two important elements in English language learning. This pilot study uses a qualitative approach to investigate the relationship between pronunciation and vocabulary choices of multilingual English language learners. In the study six different instruments were used to assess the participant’s pronunciation and their reasons for her vocabulary choices. The results showed that there is a variation in the participant’s pronunciation at the segmental and phonotactic level and her responses indicated that pronunciation has an impact in vocabulary choices as well.

    • Diabetes Education In School Nurses

      Increasing incidence of diabetes in youth requires the school nurse to be competent in providing evidence-based nursing care for the management of diabetes in the school setting. The purpose of this project was to evaluate and increase the knowledge and confidence level of school nurses in the care of students with type 1 diabetes. The lack of literature or competencies focused on diabetes management in the school setting led to the development of a curriculum and survey to measure the effectiveness of the curriculum. 15 school nurses participated in the educational offering. Paired sample t-tests demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in diabetes knowledge and confidence in diabetes care. (p<0.01).

      This research tests the hypothesis that periodic assessment of the variety and density of coastal microbes will coincide with the safety or danger of these waters for public use. We will use sterile containers to collect samples from surface water near the Salem State University mussel farm and assess microbes by conventional and genetic reactions. A prolonged study of microbial life in this area may have implications for understanding the impact of current environmental changes.

      This study examined the implications of nursing student attrition, risk factors for course failure, and proposed utilization of a faculty desktop tool to identify students in need of support to remain academically successful. The Student Academic Success Survey (SASS) tool, developed by the researchers, was used at a local regional state university with 103 students. The SAS tool was not linked with student GPA, however, its utility as an early attrition marker needs further development.
