Abstract

SV008 — Nelson Dionne Collection. Birdseye view of Salem taken from the (non-extant) cupola of the Asiatic Building on Washington Street, looking west. Some properties in view in the foreground, according to city directories, are the Isabella T. Marston house at 140 Washington (bottom-left, across the street; today, a brick commercial block), and a house (center-right, on Barton Square) split into separate properties owned by Andrew Haraden, of the Boston Express, and merchant John C. Osgood at 3 and 5 Barton Square, respectively (today, the site is partly a parking lot). In the background, the Salem Normal School on Broad Street (left) and the spire of the (non-extant) South Church on Chestnut Street (far right) are visible, along with the North Church directly below the South Church. The South Church building was destroyed by fire in 1903. Creator unknown, c. 1870-80s.
