dc.description.abstract | SV019 — Nelson Dionne Collection. View of a train passing over the North River in Salem, with a man in a railroad pump car visible behind it on the tracks to the left. Small boats are visible along the shore to the right. Taken before the dredging and narrowing of the river in 1885, as part of a sewage clean-up plan. Taken from upper Federal Street, likely in the backyard of 98 Federal Street at its fence with 94 Federal, based on the angle. The factories and tanneries on the other side of the river, along with the train causeway, are plainly visible. Published by G.K. Proctor at 206 Essex Street, Salem, Mass., in "American Views," c. 1869-74. | |
